Trail Highlight: Old Butt Knob Trail in Shining Rock Wilderness

Old Butt Knob Trail is often considered one of the toughest hikes in Shining Rock Wilderness. At 3.6 miles out and back and rated as difficult, it offers a rugged, rewarding experience for those seeking a challenge. With its steep climbs and remote feel, solitude is almost guaranteed.
The trail is most commonly accessed from the Shining Creek Trailhead. Hikers begin by following Shining Creek Trail for about a mile before reaching the junction with Old Butt Knob Trail. The other end of the trail can be accessed from deeper within the wilderness, with Ivestor Gap via the Black Balsam Trailhead being the most efficient alternative. One of the most popular ways to hike the loop is to ascend via Shining Creek Trail and descend on Old Butt Knob Trail, returning to the same trailhead.
At its highest point, around 6,000 feet, the trail levels out briefly, offering a peaceful stretch through a tunnel of rhododendron and mountain laurel. About two miles in, you’ll pass through a tall pine forest and come to a scenic rock outcropping with sweeping views, an ideal place to rest up and soak in the surroundings. From there, the trail begins a sharp and steady descent. The terrain follows a rocky ridgeline with natural stone steps, some nearly two feet tall, slowing your pace as you return to lower elevations. It’s a demanding hike, especially going downhill, but the views and sense of accomplishment are worth the effort.
Old Butt Knob Trail is also rich with wildlife. During our time on the trail, migrating songbirds passed overhead, a ruffed grouse guarded its nest nearby, and a single deer moved easily through the challenging terrain, snacking along the way.
Earlier this season, a Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS) crew completed critical maintenance at the top of the trail, clearing overgrown brush and addressing long-overdue drainage issues. Without this work, parts of the trail might have become impassable.
While Old Butt Knob is no easy feat, it’s a memorable adventure and a great way to experience the wild character of this landscape. It’s not uncommon to have the trail entirely to yourself, making it a perfect choice for anyone seeking a deeper connection with nature and a good challenge along the way.

This trail sounds like a real test of endurance, but the Block Blast views and solitude seem totally worth it. I’d love to try the loop with Shining Creek for the climb and Old Butt Knob for the descent.
