On November 20, 2025, our Program Director, Rebekah Morrisson, was recognized by the Asheville Chamber of Commerce as a nominee for the WomanUP Awards. She was nominated in the Nonprofit Leadership category for her outstanding leadership of SAWS in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. In the wake of the storm, Rebekah immediately mobilized field crews to address damage in our local communities then transitioned them to remote backcountry areas, secured vital recovery funding, and went on to lead the most expansive field season in SAWS history.
As a key leader at SAWS, Rebekah brings deep technical knowledge, strategic foresight, and a steadfast commitment to mentorship and professional growth across our team. She works tirelessly to create access to training, equipment, and advancement opportunities for all aspiring conservation leaders, ensuring our field reflects the strength and skill that stewardship work demands. Her leadership helped develop a long-term recovery strategy centered on resilience, service, and the protection of public lands across Western North Carolina.
The leadership team at SAWS is incredibly proud of our teammate Rebekah and believes it is a true honor and privilege to work alongside someone of her caliber every day. We are inspired by her dedication and grateful for the example she sets for us all.
